6th grade literacy teacher Mrs. Veronica Sanders guides students in Character Analysis projects that challenge them to take an in depth look at main characters in the novel Stargirl. This book was chosen for all 6th grade students as part of the “Growing Up” unit of inquiry, which focuses on the complexity of how people react and change through personal growth, maturity, new situations, uncertainty, and new settings.

“This project is valuable because it teaches students to appreciate the many ways we all change as we grow. In the novel, they follow a character who moves through different levels of acceptance at a new school. Character analysis helps them to understand what motivates her actions, and why she experiences different social situations in reaction to her behavior,” says Mrs. Sanders.

Students complete Character Analysis projects in groups so that they dissect characters in a forum. Final projects include results from group discussions about main characters. Each Character Analysis is presented to the class by group members.
